We all have dreams of owning and operating our own small businesses. The problem with starting a small home business is that getting startup capital can be very tough sometimes. With no reputation behind your idea or your name, finding loans and grants is next to impossible and like always, the big corporations will step in and take your good ideas and run with them themselves. I was surprised to learn then that state governments have many programs in place that help future small business owners get free grants for their ideas and startup businesses. The idea behind giving citizens free money is that they’ll take the money and start a worthwhile business that will stimulate the economy.
The downside to these grants and loans is that while it is free money from the government, you have to be able to show that your business is helping the community in some way. Starting a car wash business with taxpayer dollars won’t cut it. Most of the free grants that come from the government are designed to go to educational facilities and community centers that will open businesses that benefit the community and not the owner’s pocket. In some exceptions, grants have been known to be given to individuals to do what they want with, but these cases are rare and uncommon. If you’re still interested in starting a small business with the help of free grants from the government, look into things like the SBA and Bank of America Foundation for more information.
